What Is Hinoeuma?

A once-in-60-years cycle of fire, passion, and rebirth

2026 is the year of Hinoeuma in the traditional East Asian calendar.

Hinoeuma comes only once every 60 years.

In Japanese, Hinoe represents the powerful fire of the sun.
Uma means horse, and the horse is also connected with the energy of fire.

Together, Hinoeuma is known as a year when the energy of fire becomes especially strong.

Fire represents passion, expression, action, awakening, and rebirth.
It brings light to what has been hidden.
It moves what has been still.
It helps us bring our true desires into the world.

What happened in Japan in 1966

The previous Hinoeuma year was 1966.

In Japan at that time, there was a widespread superstition that women born in the year of Hinoeuma would be too strong-willed or difficult for marriage.

Because of this belief, the number of births in Japan dropped dramatically in 1966.

According to Our World in Data, Japan’s birth rate fell from 18.5 births per 1,000 people in 1965 to 14.5 in 1966 — a decline of more than 20%. A recent Japanese analysis also describes the 1966 birth decline as about 25.4%. (Our World in Data)

This was not simply a story about the calendar.

It was a clear example of how deeply people’s beliefs, fears, and collective imagination can influence real-life behavior and even national statistics.

Not superstition, but conscious use of energy

At SHIHOjapan, we do not introduce Hinoeuma as something to fear.

We do not support judging anyone by the year they were born.
We do not believe that a person’s value, character, or destiny should be limited by superstition.

What matters is not fear.

What matters is how we consciously work with the energy of time.

Hinoeuma is a powerful fire year.

That is why it is important not to rush blindly, but to become clear.

What do you truly want?
What words are you sending into the world?
What future are you choosing to ignite?

Fire can illuminate your life.
But if it is not handled consciously, it can also become impatience, anger, or impulsive action.

This is why the year of Hinoeuma invites us to return to our intention.

Hinoeuma as the fire of rebirth

Fire is both an ending and a beginning.

It burns away what is old.
It awakens what is new.

The year of Hinoeuma can be understood as a time to choose your life again.

Release old excuses.
Release fear.
Light the fire of what you truly wanted to do.
Bring your words and actions into alignment.

This is not only for special people.

Everyone has fire within them.
Everyone has the power to begin again.

The SHIHOjapan perspective

SHIHOjapan shares Japanese wisdom through Kotodama, the Five Elements, Guardian Beasts, and Kyoto craft.

Kotodama Oracle Cards help you receive the words you need for the day.
Guardian Beast Aroma Brooches help you carry scent, symbolism, and intention.
The Five Elements help you understand your inner balance and natural rhythm.

In a powerful fire year like Hinoeuma, we invite you to choose your words with care, wear your guardian, and set your intention for the future.

This is not superstition.

It is a way of listening to the rhythm of time and working with the energy of heaven.

What will you begin in the year of fire?

Hinoeuma.
A once-in-60-years fire cycle.

Not to be feared.
Not to be rushed through.
Not to be controlled by old beliefs.

Instead, it can be a time to quietly look at the fire within you.

What words will you choose?
What guardian will you wear?
What future will you light?

Choose your words.
Wear your guardian.
Live the fire year with intention.
